What inspired you to shift from a successful career in information technology to the world of ceramics? Was there a particular moment or experience that catalyzed this change?
When I moved to Carmel, California and wanted to have an encore career. I decided to focus on my passion, which was ceramics. It was a real brain teaser as this business is so different from my other business in IT.
How did your background in IT influence your approach to ceramics and running a creative business? Were there any surprising overlaps between the two industries?
The overlap would be the focus is on the consumer, what they want in a product. This has to be the primary goal for any business. ‘How do we please the customer?’
Moving from a tech-driven environment in Los Angeles to the artistic community of Carmel seems like a significant lifestyle change. How did this new environment impact your creative process and the development of Carmel Ceramica?
My creative process really changed over the course of the 10 years in business. I constantly need to understand what the consumer wants, as it is so different in every region especially as trends change.
How do you stay inspired and continue to innovate within your product lines, especially when balancing creative aspirations with business realities?
Many of our products came from careful thought and dreams. Foresta collection for example was created from a dream. I wanted a design that would be a perfect fit for the holidays or for anytime of the year. For the holidays, it is as if the pinecones and needles are appearing though a snow storm. It is a subtle and beautiful design, perfect for a winter table. I live in the mountains, so I use it all year round. You never know where you will get the inspiration, you just have to be open to receive it.
Thank you Elece!
